Snakeman @ Robinson’s

There are lots of superstitions, legends and such here in the Philippines. Some of them may have some basis in facts or in rumors. Filipinos are fond in making stories and believing in them too, especially the scariest ones. And one rumor/issue that struck the many is about the snakes and trapdoors at Robinsons mall’s department store. Robinson’s malls nationwide are owned by a billionaire businessman John Gokongwei, and one of its branches is the Robinson’s Galleria that is mainly affected by the issue. According to www.robinsonsmall.com that Robinson’s Galleria is the flagship mall of Robinsons Land Corporation and its located at the intersection of EDSA and Ortigas Ave. Robinson’s Galleria is a 5-level shopping mall with more than 400 shops, dining outlets, entertainment facilities and service centers, some of its features are: Robinsons Department Store, Supermarket, Food Court, 10 state of the art Cinemas, and many more. Based on the story that there is a snake that is creeping around inside the mall. This snake swallows unwary customers especially the kids and mostly the ladies. According to an article on WikiPilipinas.com and PULA.ph that this snake is a half man, and half snake creature, and was said to be the twin of Robina Gokongwei, named as Robinson. There are many versions of the legend and here the few: (a) the snake suddenly appears at dressing room mirrors, which are the gateways to the basement; (b) the mirrors serve as trapdoors which open when Robinson is hungry, and sending the victims down to a series of pipes and mazes to its chamber; (c) the fitting room mirrors were actually one-way windows, from which the snake-man could view its prey before activating the trapdoor; (d) and also from a blog entry on www.liveinthephilippines.com that snakeboy is also transported from one Robinson’s store to another. [One-way mirror is a kind of mirror and window in one, wherein it acts as a mirror from one side, and acts as a window from the other side. (http://www.jimloy.com/physics/mirror0.htm) This kind of mirror is merely for the rude enjoyment of people watching from behind, where you can see your reflection but others can see you through. To know if the mirror is one-way place the tip of the finger aginst the reflective surface and if there is a gap between the fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. However, if the fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, for it is a one-way mirror. (http://urbanlegends.about.com)] This issue was once reported on TV Patrol before. Also, Starlet Alice Dixon admitted that she was one of the victims of the trapdoors in the Robinson’s Department store fitting room; she survived because she holds on a curtain of the said fitting room. The rumors said that she was paid a million to not talk about it and not spreading too much on the media. Based on PULA.ph last June 2000 a journalist from a reputable broadsheet emailed Robinson’s Land’s PR Department for an official statement about this issue, but the only response of Robinsons is from Ms. Roseana Coscolluela of the Robinson’s Land Public Relations, she replied: “We would rather not say anything about an issue. Have a good day.” Also The Robinson’s management even showed the dressing rooms of Robinsons Department stores, especially in Robinson Galleria to the media, that their are no trap doors below or even an access door on top of the dressing room. Up to know this story is one of the most popular urban legends to talk about in the Philippines. According to the resources such as WikiPilipinas that the Snake-man creature and trapdoors of Robinson’s Galleria’s ladies fitting room spread on the early 90’s, but based on some people that this story was also a big thing on the early 80’s.
